The Global Heat Reduction Initiative

A game-changer in the fight against global warming

What is The Global Heat Reduction Initiative ?

Did you know that more than half of all global warming isn’t caused by CO2, but by climate super pollutants like methane, black carbon, nitrous oxide, and HFCs? Just by tackling these, we can avoid 0.6°C of warming by 2050, while cutting CO2 would save only 0.1°C. If done at scale, we’ll start seeing results within the next ten years.

Now, based on a groundbreaking, peer-reviewed scientific approach, the Global Heat Reduction Initiative is offering organizations the tools to deliver on that ambition.

Accelerated impact through full climate accounting

Our approach complements conventional accounting, based on 100-year periods (GWP-100), with assessments of the atmospheric heat impacts of any emission, over any timespan, including super pollutants in the near term. It’s how we help our partners gain unparalleled awareness of their full climate footprints, mitigate what they can, and offset what they can’t (yet).

We call it CO2e+. Here’s what that means:

  • Everything that is included in conventional, GWP-100-based climate accounting
  • Climate super pollutants and all other drivers of climate change
  • Quantified and verified heat impacts over any time frame
  • Quantified and verified co-benefits and tradeoffs in terms of the U.N. SDGs

  • Registry
  • Footprinting
  • Advocacy and partnerships

The Global heat Reduction Registry offers high-integrity, third-party verified credits, called Heat Reduction Credits (HRCs), designed to support effective mitigation projects focused on climate super pollutant reduction and enable buyers to play a greater role in curbing excess atmospheric heat.

The Global Heat Reduction Footprint is the most comprehensive on the market today, enabling organizations to inventory their full climate footprint, including super pollutants and heat impacts, so they can identify and prioritize smart, cost-effective mitigation steps.
