Biobased Content Certification

For products sourced from eligible biomass sources

What is Biobased Content Certification?

The SCS-114 Standard for Biobased Content specifies the criteria for third-party certification of biobased content in materials. This certification is applicable when the biobased content is derived from either mass balance allocation or physical segregation methods using eligible biomass sources.

SCS-114 is pertinent to any material integrated into a product for which the manufacturer makes a claim regarding its biobased content. Furthermore, it applies to operators who seek to demonstrate the traceability of biobased content back to a certified source of biomass through a certified chain of entities.

Certification to the SCS-114 standard, conducted by SCS Global Services, adds significant value to clients' businesses by enhancing their sustainability credentials, improving market competitiveness, reducing risks, increasing supply chain transparency, and fostering meaningful stakeholder engagement. It ensures broad acceptance of third-party certified materials from various sustainable sources that meet the requirements. The standard also allows for the mixing of different certified materials, providing one Chain of Custody standard for multiple certified inputs.

SCS-114 primarily functions as a chain of custody standard and can be utilized by:

  • All entities within the supply chain involved in the production or processing of gaseous, liquid, and solid biobased fuels, polymers, or products.
  • Users and producers of hydrogen derived from biomass or electrolysis of water using renewable energy. This applies particularly to those wishing to make claims regarding hydrogen incorporated into biobased products.
  • Readily defined acceptance of Hydrogen, Nitrogen, Oxygen, and water where applicable.

SCS will perform audits and assessments to ensure that clients meet these requirements. This includes documenting the traceability of biobased materials from certified sources throughout all stages of production and processing until their integration into the final product. The certificate is valid for 3 years, with surveillance audits. There are allowances for limiting site visits (remote/virtual audits are allowed), which helps reduce carbon impact and costs.
