SCS Global Services (SCS), an international leader in third-party environmental and sustainability certification, congratulated this year’s roster of FSC Leadership Award winners, announced today by the Forest Stewardship Council®. Among these honorees are SCS-certified certificate holders Bio Pappel, Element5, F&W Forestry, HP Inc., and Melissa & Doug, and one-time SCS staff member, the late Lafcadio Cortesi, a lifelong advocate for responsible forestry and the welfare of workers.
The annual FSC awards recognize top certified companies, projects, trademark license holders, nonprofits, and individuals that exhibit excellence in the use of FSC certified products and commitment to responsible forestry.
“SCS is delighted to see these esteemed companies, organizations, and individuals obtain well-earned recognition for their efforts to create positive impacts in their respective regions, industries, and areas of expertise,” said Maggie Schwartz, Managing Director of Forestry, SCS. “They are at the forefront of sustainable forestry – penetrating new markets, increasing visibility of the FSC logo, educating consumers, accelerating FSC commitments, and advancing responsible forestry.”
SCS-certified award recipients include:
- Bio Pappel for being one of the largest manufacturers of recycled paper in Mexico, using 100% recycled raw materials to produce FSC-certified paper for major brands.
- Element5 for earning and promoting FSC certification in Ontario’s first cross-laminated timber manufacturing plant to create low-carbon building materials for the 21st Century.

FSC recognized him as a leader “for dedicating his life to conserving forests and defending community rights around the world, especially in Canada and Indonesia.” Mr. Cortesi was SCS’ Policy Director for Environmental Affairs and Human Rights in 2019.
"Lafcadio was a relentless advocate for the fair treatment of workers, community engagement, and protection of the environment as the foundations of responsible forestry,” said Linda Brown, SCS Co-founder and Senior Vice President. “With deep passion and an enduring optimism, he helped drive positive change throughout the industry.”
